Bangladesh has seen a sharp rise in digital mobile top-ups in recent years, with a surge in the number of MFS users and debit and credit card users.

There are now 20 million MFS accounts and 18.5 million SIMs in circulation, with many people using multiple accounts and connections.

Currently, the monthly revenue of mobile operators is more than Tk 2,650 crore. This means that recharging through MFS providers accounts for about 40 per cent of the revenue generated through the sale of airtime and internet data.

In April, 59 per cent of Grameenphone's customers recharged directly through its agents, while the rest were recharged digitally using the MFS network and debit and credit cards.

BKash alone accounts for 23 per cent of GP's total recharge, while Nagad accounts for 4 per cent and Rocket for 1 per cent.

Rifat Jahan, a resident of the capital's Mirpur area, is one of the mobile phone users who has completely switched to digital purchase of mobile airtime and internet.

"I can't remember the last time I went to a shop to recharge my mobile. I mostly use MFS accounts. And if there is not enough money in the accounts, I ask my husband to top up the phone with his credit card".

Robi-Axiata's digital sales account for approximately 45 per cent of its total recharge volume.

"It signifies our significant transition to digital platforms," said Shahed Alam, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer of the country's second largest operator.

Digital recharge has gained popularity around the world in recent years, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced customers to accelerate their use of digital technologies to stay connected.Bangladesh is no exception. We have seen a significant increase in the use of digital channels for recharging mobile airtime," added Alam.

BKash is the most preferred platform for customers to top up their balances.

According to the largest MFS operator, more than 7 crore customers top up balances using the networks of Airtel, Banglalink, Grameenphone, Robi and Teletalk.

"To fully enjoy the convenience of mobile phones, an uninterrupted voice and data connection is a must. Therefore, recharging mobile airtime whenever required is crucial," said Shamsuddin Haider Dalim, Head of Corporate Communications, bKash.

BKash allows its users to top up their mobile balance and purchase airtime and internet data for their own consumption as well as for others. To enhance the user experience, bKash has introduced the auto-recharge feature.
