Hajj and Umrah are once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimages that bring Muslims to the holy city of Makkah and the House of Allah, yearning for a chance to start again. Pilgrims will spend time emotionally, physically, and spiritually preparing themselves before starting on this major trip. When planning for Umrah, there are certain unique issues for women to keep in mind. A woman must be aware of the rules of menstruation (hayd) and post-natal bleeding (nifas).

    State of Pilgrim Sanctity (Ihram)

A woman on hayd or nifas must undergo ihram before entering the prescribed limits, just like all other pilgrims (miqat). However, because of her ritual defilement, she will enter ihram in a somewhat different manner than others.

Recite the Talbiyah, which is a mandated prayer.

She should not, however, conduct the two Rakat sunnah prayer since she is not allowed to pray (salat) during menstruation. A menstrual lady is prohibited from entering the Sacred State (Haram), as well as the locations inside its confines. The Sai is conducted on the grounds between Safa and Marwa, which are not inside Haram's limits. As a result, whether in hayd or nifas, she is authorized to enter this location. She can come and depart through the doors near the restroom and wudu facilities, which are close to the sai grounds, to avoid entering the Haram area. A menstrual lady is not permitted to circumambulate the Kaaba (tawaf) because she must be ritually clean. She must leave the masjid promptly if her period begins during tawaf.

    Umrah

If a lady is menstruating while in ihram, she must stay in ihram until her Umrah is over. She can only do tawaf for 'Umrah once she has attained purity.

    Tawaf al-Ifadah:

This is one of the Hajj's mandatory components, without which it would be incomplete. If a woman was menstruating at the time of the tawaf, she should stay in Makkah until she becomes pure, even if it means staying longer than she had expected. The menstruation lady has been granted permission to postpone her period till she becomes pure, even beyond the 12th of Dhul Hajj, without incurring any penalties. Until this tawaf is completed, the laws of ihram shall apply. If returning to Makkah is not an option, she can utilize medicine to stop the bleeding (if medically necessary). If a woman is taking medicine, it is critical that she understands her menstruation and purity habits, since the ruling will be based on her bleeding history. If she is doubtful, she should seek advice from a scholar on the subject.

Sacrifice to Make Up for It (Dam)

If a woman has no other option than to perform tawaf in hayd or nifas, the tawaf is legal and she is relieved of her responsibilities. However, in order to be emancipated from ihram, she must make a sacrifice. A camel shall be slain on her behalf if she performs an obligatory tawaf (Tawaf al-Ifadah or tawaf of Umrah). A lesser animal, such as a sheep, must be sacrificed on her behalf if she performs a non-obligatory tawaf (nafl tawaf, Tawaf al-Qudum, or Tawaf al-Wada). No compensation is necessary if tawaf is repeated in a condition of purity.
