A striped snake lies out on a porch in a north Raleigh neighborhood where a zebra cobra has disappeared.

A zebra cobra, which can spit up to nine feet, is faster than most snakes, so even a morning stroll with the dog becomes a fearsome event. Apparently, African Snakebite Institute believes the snake is very dangerous. A victim's nervous system could shut down if stung with venom.

An immediate reaction to the poison of a cobra is pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. In the aftermath, a severe fever and breathing problems would ensue, which could eventually lead to respiratory failure.

Dr. brisbane north snake catcher Salina Locke, a veterinarian with Avian and Exotic Animal Care, treats an array of animals.

The cobra in this species usually does not bite. She said they are more likely to spray their venom . they are very precise and go straight for the eyes.

Despite the risks associated with this snake, Locke does not recommend it as a pet.

Most bites occur when a person is sleeping. Health problems can linger for years for people who are bit, according to research.

In the late afternoon on Tuesday, police searched 6917 Chamonix Place, near the place where the snake was last spotted.

In March, police visited the home four times because of an animal problem. In the afternoon, the zebra cobra was spotted on a porch half a mile away.
