You must have heard of laser tattoo removal as it the best way to get rid of the tattoo ink from your body. The most asked question regarding tattoo removal surgery is ‘whether it is painful or not ?’ But let’s first see how the surgery is performed.

    How laser removal procedure work?

Tattoos are permanent and this makes the entire process more interesting. The ink is inserted into the skin with the help of needles and the white blood cells break down the ink very slowly. The ink is discharged and processed. The ink particles are very large, therefore the blood cells cannot remove it and this makes it permanent.

If you wish to remove the tattoo then laser removal is the best option. The beam of lasers that comes out, break the ink particles bit by bit. The laser makes it smaller which makes it easier for the white blood cells to remove them.

The laser which is used for tattoo removal is ‘ultrashort pulse laser’ or ‘q-switched’. These lasers are brought to a very high temperature, which helps the tattoo ink to break it easily. It works at an extremely fast speed which is measured in ‘picoseconds’. As the speed of the laser plays an important part in the entire process.

However, it might sound a quick fix to the problem. But, you have to get several rounds to get the tattoo removed. Sometimes the result might not be the best which you are hoping for as it also depends on the size of the tattoo.

    Is the surgery painful?

No doubt, the surgery is painful and mostly the patients describe the pain of being snapped by a rubber-band. Additionally, the laser is of very high temperature and it is also directed towards one particular spot. However, the skin is not all harmed or damaged in the entire process. The energy from the lasers sends vibration as it forms shockwave through the skin. Due to vibration, the skin becomes pale and it causes the skin to raise. The entire feeling will last for a few seconds.

In addition, underneath the skin receptor cells are located and they pick up signals and send it to the brain. Some places are more sensitive such as feel and hand so you might feel more sensation in those areas. Some people might feel pain more pain while others don’t find it not at all painful. So, you can say that it depends on person to person that how much they can tolerate. There are some pain relief treatments which can help such as numbing cream, cold air machines, cold compress, and lidocaine injections.

However, if you have a tattoo close to the bone or where fat is less, then it can hurt. As these areas are more sensitive, whether you are getting a tattoo or getting it removed it might be slightly painful and uncomfortable.

Additionally, you will notice swelling and redness around the area which will go away within 24 hours from the treatment.
