FIFA 22 - EA motion-captured a real-time 90-minute soccer match

  • As the fouls accumulate as do the goals. Atletico Sanluque?o go 3-1 up. In the second half, CD Gerena, chasing the rebound, abandon their calm, possession-based style of FIFA 22 Coins play. Fast forwards and pacy wingers are substituted and long balls are hurled into the box. Wave after wave of attack is met with heroic leaps by Sanluque?o's centre backs. But there's only so much that the backs to wall defense can absorb. Gerena can pull back a goal.

With minutes remaining, and desperation draining already tired legs and minds, Sanluque?o stage an incredible breakaway. They take the win 4-2. After the players leave in joy and the Gerena team slump down on their haunches. Some shake their heads, others are looking up at the sky. They know how much this match is about - it will go down in history as being one of the most significant ninety minutes of football to ever be played. But it's unlikely to be recorded in any of the historical books.

For a change from club colours, each side is sporting the Xsens motion-capture suits. On the touchlinethe players are huddled around laptops. Short-range signalling devices, tracking players' movements down in millimetres, sit in the stands with technicians studying tablets with live metrics. Many thousands of miles away, animators are watching proceedings unfold on Zoom. It's not the work of a space age team of scouting, nor is it the latest innovations in coaching.

The developers are EA, who created FIFA 22. It was the first time ever, EA motion-captured a real-time 90-minute soccer match, and then tracked the players' movements at an extremely precise level. This data could later be added to its animation database.

The game publisher was looking for the biggest details down to the minute details, From how a full-back smacks the ball with their laces, to how a playmaker instantly glances over their shoulder prior to receiving a pass. "Ultimately it's about realism, which is what makes a better game," states Gareth Eaves, senior animation director at EA who conducted the live session. "We had wanted to do this for a long time but buy FUT 22 Coins the technology had not been in place."
