The platelet-rich plasma and hair loss

According to some estimates, hair loss could affect 70% of men and up to 40% of women after the age of 50, more or less importantly especially for her, often with significant psychological repercussions.

Men and women lose their hair according to different patterns: male hair loss tends to affect the front part of the scalp (receding hairline) and the central area while the female one is usually more uniform and is therefore identified as a homogeneous and widespread thinning.

    What is the PRP?

PRP is short for platelet rich plasma, a vital component found in our blood. The plasma portion of our blood hosts regenerative cells and platelets, as well as important proteins and growth factors such as PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor), FGF-2 (fibroblast growth factor), TGF-b (transforming growth factor) -beta) and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor).

To separate and isolate the PRP, the specialist, aesthetic doctor or dermatologist, takes about 20cc of blood (as during a normal blood sample) in sterile disposable prp tubes. The blood sample is placed in a device (prp centrifuge) thanks to which it is possible to separate the particles by isolating the plasma rich in platelets. The PRP is then extracted from the blood and injected via fine needles directly into the areas of the scalp where it is desired to stimulate hair growth.

It is necessary to perform a total of 3 sessions , spaced a month from each other. It usually takes about 6 months to get visible results. It is possible for patients to have fuller hair and stronger follicles for the rest of their life by repeating the treatment on a regular basis (2-3 times a year according to the patient's needs).

PRP can be used for both the scalp and the eyebrows. The scalp is certainly the more popular of the two application areas, but people may want to restore their eyebrows that are thinning due to excessive thinning (waxing or tweezing) or that have fallen out due to a medical condition.

The onset of hair loss in men usually occurs around the age of 30, often triggered by an excess of DHT or dihydrotestosterone . In women, on the other hand, there are various factors including stress, changes in hormone levels such as pregnancy and menopause.

Common causes in both sexes implicated in hair loss:

    • Inheritance
    • Increased levels of DHT
    • Anemia
    • Stress
    • Changes in hormone levels
    • Pharmacological therapies
    • Autoimmune Diseases

PRP treatment is proving to be one of the safest and most effective methods of hair care and is successfully used in numerous centers around the world.

The PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma or Platelet Rich Plasma) is able to give the hair follicle the physiological stimulus of activation thanks to the growth factors naturally contained in the plasma capable of inducing the hair stem cells to re-enter the cell cycle and replicate .

    Who is PRP treatment for?

PRP is a great choice for men and women looking for a non-surgical hair restoration solution.

The best candidates for PRP hair restoration are men and women who are in the earliest stages of hair thinning or loss. This is because the follicles are still somewhat active but are not generating the desired hair growth.

However, even patients with inactive follicles can be good candidates: PRP is also successfully used in cases of patchy alopecia areata and in subjects who have already undergone autotransplantation to improve the surgical result.
