One of the most common questions or requests about app promotion is "how do I promote my app for free?"

This article is about how to go about creating free publicity for your app using press release articles.

So just what is a press release? Well, in its most common form a press release is a notice or news about something or someone that is submitted to a news media outlet, be it print, radio, TV, Internet etc. The purpose of which, at least for a small business, is to gain free exposure, hopefully favourable exposure to the media outlet's readers, listeners, viewers etc.

The biggest challenge is of course getting the media outlet to run your 'story'. As you can imagine they are inundated with requests from individuals and business vying for attention to gain free media coverage for their business or app.

One of the ways in which small business are almost guaranteed of gaining free publicity is to be seen to support a charity. Whether it's a one-off gift to a charity or aid organisation or an ongoing commitment to the charity, this is certainly a soft spot for media outlets.

But many of us small business owners just want to receive media exposure simply for who we are and what we do rather than have to necessarily support charities, visit hospitals or supply aid to third world countries. Now, these of course are all worthwhile causes and if this is an angle you'd like to approach from then go for it by all means.

What I'd like to show you here though is how to obtain free media coverage without any perceived grovelling or 'buying' attention for your small business or app. Ok, so let's get into it.

I can tell you right now if you want to receive free, ongoing media attention for your small business or app then you have to position yourself as an EXPERT in your field or industry. Why? Simple, people pay attention to and respect experts. Just think about the types of people who appear regularly on TV as experts in their field. They've typically written books or run a successful business in their industry, are therefore perceived to be an expert and buy ios app downloads.

This is the essential key to obtaining free media coverage for your app. So let's talk about how to submit a press release about your app.

    Here's what not to do:

    - We, We, We! DO NOT submit a press release that says 'we are so good', 'we did this', 'we sell this', 'we offer this'. This is what most people THINK will get them in the newspaper but they're dead wrong.

Remember I talked about positioning yourself as an expert in your field? The 'expert' approach is the one you must take if you're to be perceived by a journalist as someone 'worthy' to talk to or interview.

Here's how to write a press release...

First, it must EDUCATE and INFORM people. Imagine you're writing an article about a specific area in your field and submitting it to a magazine which will appear as an article that people can LEARN something from. This is the approach you must take. To do this you can come from several angles. One of the best is to SOLVE PROBLEMS. We're all human, if someone can show us a better, faster, smarter way of doing something that will save us time, money, stress, inconvenience etc then we want to know about it.

The first step is to think HEADLINES. Write down some headlines that are either INTERESTING, SHOCKING, CONTROVERSIAL or PROBLEM SOLVING.

    For example:

INTERESTING: "How this 84 year old grandmother of twelve took 30 years off her face with this little known ancient health remedy"

SHOCKING: "Why I look better naked now at 84 than I did at 54!"

CONTROVERSIAL: "Could this ancient 'youthing' remedy wipe out the anti-aging industry overnight?"

PROBLEM SOLVING: "The 11 pitfalls of aging and how to avoid them"

Make sense? So these are four approaches you can now take with your press release 'article'. Now that you have a headline the article practically writes itself.

Your article should be between 300-500 words and must be consistent with your headline. It's no good writing a great headline then filling the article with we,we,we talk.

In the headline you've made a promise to deliver information, to EDUCATE and INFORM the reader, in this case, the journalist. And the power of an informative and educational article is that from a journalist's point of view, since the article is already written they don't have to do any work! Most of the time they'll simply conduct a phone interview with you to get a few quotes to embed into the article which they will simply re-write from the information you've provided. They'll either have their photographer come out to take a photograph of you or may simply ask you to provide them with a photo. Next minute, you're in the paper! It really is that simple.

So, now that you're armed with this information, it's time to get started with your press release. Begin with writing headlines for ideas then the rest will flow from there. Good luck!
