Man Made Diamonds: Is it Even Possible?

  • There is something truly magical about the thought of diamonds that have been created over millions of years in the intense conditions closer to the earth’s core, however, the demand for diamonds is rapidly outstripping supply of this precious metal—and a new contender is now an option: manmade, artificial diamonds. Though these diamonds don’t have quite the same “wow factor” as diamonds that have been lovingly extracted from lush, fertile soils after their billion year long journey to reach the surface of the planet, manmade diamonds are still phenomenally beautiful minerals which could very well change the way in which we buy and sell diamonds.

But are manmade diamonds even possible, anyway? And are they worth it? Here at ExecutiveIce, we’re here to answer these questions and more, so give us a shout to learn all about diamonds today!

    How Diamonds are Made Naturally

The peak of diamond creation in the earth reached its pinnacle many millions of years ago, at some point around the time of the Proterozoic era one to three billion years ago. At this time, the world was completely unrecognizable from what we know today, with the oldest ever discovered fossils not having evolved much and life being limited to the seas exclusively, and primitive at that. But, despite life being off to a very slow start at this point of time, there was something else that was in full swing; diamond production, hundreds of kilometers below the surface of the earth. The immense heat and pressure of the still young earth at this time provided the ideal conditions for diamonds to be created, and these diamonds are the ones that we are just uncovering today.

But what if there is another option? Man made diamonds don’t sound quite so magical, but the artificial production of diamonds could be a good means for scientists to produce pure, uncontaminated diamonds for the most discerning of buyers.

Could Man Made Diamond Production Take Off?

Man Made diamond production sounds less magical, but even these artificial diamonds still command immense price tags—because invariably, scientists have to replicate the almost hadean conditions of 100km down in a laboratory setting to even have a chance of creating diamonds.

So, could these diamonds take off? Though they’ve been made available much more quickly, manmade and artificial diamonds are very similar to each other; if anything, manmade diamonds are purer, and this could make them worth even more that artificial diamonds in the right markets!
