Many women all over the world face the problem of unwanted pregnancy. Despite the fact that abortion is legal in the USA, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions that make women suffer from uncertainty. However, you should understand that your environment shouldn’t affect your decision. That’s why we gathered these five debunked myths about abortion you should stop believing in.

    1. You will not be able to get pregnant after the abortion

In a healthy woman, abortion shouldn't cause infertility. However, the consequences for each particular woman are different. After the abortion, certain complications may develop, especially if there were latent infections. Infertility after the first abortion is rather the exception than the rule. This means that after the abortion a woman can deliver a healthy child. In general, the development of infertility depends on the health of the woman and on heredity.

It is impossible to predict exactly what consequences a particular woman will have after an abortion. However, many women that didn't have an abortion experience many problems after the first pregnancy. For example, many women subconsciously begin to believe that pregnancy is accompanied by inconvenience and suffering. This leads to that during subsequent pregnancies there is a serious psychological state that may even cause a miscarriage.

    2. Abortion is more dangerous than a delivery

It is difficult to compare the risks of abortion and childbirth because these processes are from different categories. The risk of complications during and after abortion is minimized. Aside from all ethical issues, abortion is a simple medical manipulation with a predictable outcome. Pregnancy is the most complex process that can result in fetal abnormalities, gestational diabetes and preeclampsia in the mother, difficulties in childbirth, etc.

    3. You will suffer from depression after the abortion

This misconception is usually imposed by ethical reasons. If the pregnancy was unwanted and a woman was not forced to perform an abortion, there is no reason to suspect depression. Moreover, you should know that more than 90 percent of women that performed the abortions are confident in the correctness of their choice.

United States anti-abortion movement has consistently maintained that most women regret abortion and become depressed. However, studies show that the denial of abortion harms a woman’s mental health more than the actual procedure. Abortions have been carried out for more than 40 years and caused emotional and psychological damage to women. But this stress was short-term, most women successfully cope with it and have no serious consequences in the future.

    4. Abortion can lead to breast cancer

Studies have not found a link between abortion and infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or breast cancer. Despite the fact that all surgeries involve a certain risk, there is no direct damage to fertility and a correctly performed abortion is safer than pregnancy. The risk of developing breast cancer can increase during pregnancy, but it is not clear whether abortion affects it. Moreover, even in the absence of clear evidence scientists can't confirm the single opinion that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer or any other type of cancer.

    5. Abortion is the result of irresponsibility

You should understand that fertility and conception are not always controlled by women. Some studies have shown that more than half of all women who have had an abortion have used contraception. It is also important to understand that no contraception guarantees 100 percent effectiveness. The circumstances of a woman’s life and health like irregular periods, menopause, medication, medical conditions, stress can affect birth control effectiveness. In addition, sex is not always voluntary, even if it occurs between two spouses.
