Owning an RV or a camper can be an extremely fun and exciting experience. But, before hitching up the camper or revving up the RV, it’s always important to understand how it all works. When speaking about “how it all works,” we mean what actually needs to happen before you hit the road, during your trip, and after you get home. There is surprisingly a lot that can go into owning a camper, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it when you’re able to spend some time doing things that you love like traveling and camping.

For example, if you own or are planning to purchase a 5th wheel camper, there are certain essential items and equipment needed to ensure you’re locked and ready to get out on the road. By knowing what to expect and what equipment you need, it will give you that peace of mind that is needed during the stress of planning and trip and actually traveling.

A 5th wheel camper can come in multiple sizes, some of them being quite large. It’s especially important to know how to properly travel with such a large camper, as your trip can go downhill quickly if things go wrong. So, here are some tips on how to hook up your Husky 5th wheel hitch to your truck and what to do when you reach your destination.

Steps to Use Your Husky 5th Wheel Hitch

Here are some steps on what to do when you are ready to hook up your camper to your truck.

    1. Park on a Flat Surface

Ensure that your truck and camper are both on level ground. The levelness will make sure that the kingpin will have a strong and correct connection. This will also help when it’s time to back your truck up to the camper. Double-check to make sure the hitch is set up at the correct height. Add necessary stability by chocking the wheels of the camper so it doesn’t move.

    2. Open 5th Wheel Jaw

Retract the locking bar or open the jaws and place the hitch in a position where it’s ready to couple. This can usually be done by pulling the side panel and making sure that it’s in the open position.

    3. Back Your Truck Up

Lower the tailgate and carefully back your truck up to the kingpin area of the camper. After the truck is in the right position, put it in park.

    4. Adjust Trailer Jacks Accordingly

Move the trailer jacks up or down until the 5th wheel hitch plate is slightly above the kingpin.

    5. Engage the 5th Wheel Coupler

Then continue to back your truck up until the kingpin is engaged with the 5th wheel hitch.

    6. Test It

To make sure everything was done correctly, put the truck in drive and slowly inch the truck forward. If there is a bit of resistance from the trailer, you’ve done it correctly.
