No one expects to get into a car accident, and no matter what injuries you have, it is an overwhelming situation. From a bump on the arm to something much more severe, you have to put your health first after a traumatic experence such as an auto accident. While there are other things to get done after an auto accident, such as collect insurance informaiton or find legal represenation, taking care of yourself first has to be a priority.

After you’ve been involved in a car accident, the first step is to remain calm and assess injuries. This feels impossible, especially after the trauma of a car accident, but it is critical. Finding out the condition of yourself, your loved ones, the vehicle into which you’ve collided - this is all critical information for later. You may not be able to feel that your arm is broken or that your head is bleeding due to adrenaline, but to physically see these injuries and understand they happened is important. Do the same for any people that are in the car with you.

It hardly has to be said, but get to a safe area, such as the side of the road, and call 911. Regardless of who is at fault or the severity of injuries, the authorities have to be notified. Communicate clearly with the 911 dispatcher, the other party involved, and to those within your car. Exchange all necessary information, such as names, insurance company and policy information, driver’s license numbers, tags, make and model of vehicles, and the other driver’s personal contact information.

Once you’ve called 911, police and emergency medical technicians will arrive on the scene. It can be an exhausting process after an accident, but it is a critical process knowing that they could be at fault. It is also important to make room for emergency personnel and allow them to do their job - they are here to help you. The emergency personnel assess your injuries, and even if you feel fine, it is best to undergo their examination. This will either show that you are truly fine or that there are injuries worth noting on an accident report.

As you care for yourself or your loved ones aftr a car accident, call an accident attorney when there is a moment to breathe. Take all photos of the accident, of your injuries, any accident reports and other relevant information and they will help you build your case against the negligent party.
