Technicians must have the ability to use necessary tools for handling files, directories, command-line environments, and documentation. They must be well-versed about how to operate systems, which include activities such as booting into different run levels and identifying processes. They must have a good understanding of virtual machines and controlling services. It is the responsibility of a Red Hat Certified Technician to configure local storage with the help of partitions and logical volumes.

Red Hat Certified Technicians (RHCT) create and install file systems and file system attributes which include encryption, permissions, and access control lists. They also play an active role in software installations, updates, and core services. Technicians manage users and groups that include the use of a centralized directory for authentication. They also monitor basic firewall security and SELinux configuration.
