The fiber to be terminated must be prepared and inserted into the back of the connector using a specialized cutting tool, where an index matching gel is typically used to bridge the gap between the two fibers. The terminating fiber is held in place using some form of crimping or locking mechanism at the rear of the connector.

    Pigtail Connectors: Splice connectors can be used in place of pre-polished connector systems or epoxy termination methods. The pigtail is a short length 900 micron buffer fiber that is factory connected to a fiber optic connector. Therefore, it eliminates the need for any field termination or polishing of the connector. The fiber ends of the pigtails are spliced ??to the end of the fiber optic cable, and the pigtails are then attached to the fiber optic cable. Fusion is a preferred method of splicing in which two fibers are melted together using a high power arc to form a single continuous glass strand.

    Fusion welding usually requires the use of precision fiber cutting tools and fusion splicers. The fusion splicer is used to automatically align the two fiber ends and fuse them together to form a very low loss joint.
